Lesson P7 - Joystick Reading on the X68000

The X68000 doesn't have it's 'own' joystick... it uses a 9 pin port, that quite strangely supports 2 button MSX joypads, or 8 button Genesis / Megadrive joypads (6 fires + Mode/Start) This gives us a joypad layout that rivals the NeoGeo - and more than we're ever likely to need... it's not to hard t...

Lesson P12 - Joystick Reading on the Amiga

The Amiga uses the classic 'Atari style' 4 direction 1 fire 9 pin joystick... Despite being such a classic digital joystick, it's actually connected to a 'Mouse Port' and the data is encoded in a way we've not seen in these tutorials before... lets take a look! http://www.chibiakumas.com/68000/platf...

Lesson P11 - Joystick Reading on the Genesis

The original Genesis controller had 3 fire buttons, and one select... but later on, to compete with the SNES an extra 3 buttons were added, We need to use a control port to select the keys to read in, then read the actulal keystates from a second port, Lets take a look! http://www.chibiakumas.com/68...

Lesson P10 - Cursor reading on the Sinclair QL

On the Sinclair QL we have no joystick, so we're going to use the keyboard instead,

We're going to read the cursors, and use them to 'simulate' the same joystick buttons on our other systems.

Lesson P9 - Joystick Reading on the NeoGeo

The Joystick on the NeoGeo makes things easy for us! There are two ports, one contains Select/Start buttons, and the other contains the joypad settings. We can just read in from these to get the directions selected on the Joypad. http://www.chibiakumas.com/68000/platform.php#LessonP9 https://youtu.b...

Lesson P8 - Joystick Reading on the Atari ST

It's time for the Atari ST!... we're going to read in from the Atari's 1 button Joystick... Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there's no way of getting direct access to the Joystick... so begrudgingly I'm going to have to use the firmware to do the job! http://www.chibiakumas.com/68000/platform.php#Le...

Lesson P15 - Joystick Reading on the NES / Famicom and SNES

The Nes/Famicom has a great joypad, with 2 fires, and select start it's a really nice fit for our 1 byte per controller setup... However the Nes Joypad is a little bit of a pain, as we need to read in one bit at a time... lets learn how! http://www.chibiakumas.com/6502/platform2.php#LessonP15 https:...
