A bit of Fun? running a Z80 from a breadboard!

Post by akuyou » Fri Apr 26, 2019 1:07 pm

I'd love to try this one day when I get time... in this video Julian Ilett fires up a Z80 on a bread board with a couple of LED's showing the Address bus and Clock in action... with some resistors simulating a 1 byte ROM!

For someone like me, who's messed with the ASM code, but never really seen what happens 'Next' in the hardware chain - this was really fascinating, and really helps add some perspective to the Z80 as a chip, rather than just a programming language for a Hardware novice like me!

I've been looking into Ben Eaters 8-bit breadboard computer. So far i've made the CPU clock and thats it haha!

I actually bought the timing chip to do it, but it's another thing I've not got around to... it looks fascinating

I wish I was better with soldering and electronics, but I don't have a lot of skill or confidence in that area - so at the moment I'm just focusing on the software side, where I can achieve more, and where making a mistake can be 'undone' with ctrl-z!
